New Amerykah Pt. II : Return of the Ankh
Ms. Badu never fails to get my ears listening to her amazing music. I loved New Amerykah Pt. I but after giving Pt. II a listen, I think this one is more favorable of the two to my liking. It's more soulful, consists of a few samples, and is filled with more love-related themes. I'm a sucker for love, what can I say. The album consists of production collabs with Jdilla, Questlove, Madlib, and 9th wonder to name a few and with whom she's worked with in her previous albums. My favorite tracks at the moment are "Turn Me Away (Get Munny); where Biggie's and Junior Mafia's "Get Money"is sampled and she harmonizes to where Biggie should be flowing, "Gone Baby, Don't be long"; where Paul McCartney & Wing's "Arrow through Me" is sampled to make this sexy and lyrically relatable track, & "Umm Hmm" where Madlib and Erykah make sure you can feel and ride of the song's every groove.
She was recently quoted about this album and I love her description of it.
"I called it 'Part II: The Return of the Ankh' because this album is the sister of the left side of my brain – it is the right side.'Part I was the left side of my thoughts – it was more socially political and my thought process was more analytical. This time there wasn't anything to be concerned with – the album is more emotional and flowy and talks about feelings. It reminds of the days of 'Baduizm' – this is just about beats and rhymes in a cipher."
